No matter what you say about hip hop's past, yesterdays rappers may have admired Hollywood's gangsters, 70's Blackplotation Celebs and even jewels, hos, cars, bling and a big ass bowl of cereal, but all that has changed and now today's rapper strives to be the top entreprenuer at marketing not only his name but various products. No doubt the dwindling record labels in the early 2000's opened the eyes and ears of hip hop's finest who discovered the power they had in marketing their OWN images and it's working big time.
In the most recent Forbes Hip Hop's Richest Stars list, the ruthless Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has dethroned Jay-Z as the richest hip-hop artist of 2008, according to the latest Forbes estimates. 50 reeled in a whopping $150 million to take the No.1 spot on this year's Hip-Hop Cash Kings list. Jay-Z settled for the runner-up position with an impressive $82 million, even though he'll probably claim that his figures were underestimated like he did last year. Diddy, another mogul who challenged last year's list, rounds up with the Top 3 with a paltry $35 million. Other notable top earners include Kanye West (#4), Lil Wayne (#11), and Common (#12). Despite a prolonged musical hiatus, Dr. Dre managed to finish in the Top 10. Here's a complete rundown of 2008's hip-hop cash kings:
